Chris-Howes-Headshot_webChris Howes earned his bachelor’s in Anthropology and American Cultural Studies from Bates College. Upon graduation, he worked at Mitchell College, the Rocky Hill School, and at Wesleyan University, where he earned his master’s degree, and served as an admissions and financial-aid intern and as an assistant coach for the men’s lacrosse team.  After two years at Wesleyan, Mr. Howes worked for eight years at Severn School in Maryland.  For the last three of those years, he served as Severn’s Dean of Students. During his time at Severn, he also earned a graduate certificate in Educational Leadership in Independent Schools from Johns Hopkins University. Currently, Chris is the Dean of Student Life at Cushing Academy. During his career, Chris also developed professionally as a Klingenstein Summer Institute Fellow at Columbia, Teachers College; co-founded, led, and presented at AIM’s Learning to Lead: The Art and Practice of Teaching Leadership. acted as a presenter at the annual IAAM conference and the AIMS teacher retreat; was a participant and an institute scholar at the Gardner Carney Leadership Institute; a lead mentor at GCLI Extension Program on the Pedagogy of Leadership with the University of Pennsylvania; a member of the International Leadership Association; and a participant at the NAIS annual conference, NAIS People of Color Conference, Stanley H. King Counseling Institute, Blackberry River Retreat, and USILA annual lacrosse convention.  Most recently, Chris attended the University of California Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center’s Summer Institute for incorporating mindfulness and social-emotional learning into educational programs.
